Alongside my exhibited work I have always drawn and painted directly from 'life'. I consider life drawing as an essential (and enjoyable) practice to maintain the high level of visual awareness necessary to enable me to paint. My belief is that to be a visual artist of any kind you have to be able to 'see' - with insight, not just sight. Drawing is, amongst many other delightful things, the evidence of how well you have understood what you have seen.
In, of all places - some art schools, the opportunity to draw from the human figure has been neglected, or even dismissed. Sadly I haven't yet seen even a comparable alternative emerge to visually educate students. I hope by offering Life drawing and Painting classes, outside the art school system, to provide those of you who still value durable skills over ephemeral attitudes the opportunity to look and learn.
Should you live nearby, I hold a weekly life drawing class on thursday evenings here in Leamington Spa. I also teach a monthly 'life' workshop (usually on the first saturday of the month) at Shottery near Stratford on Avon. These workshops consist of an entire day of either life drawing or painting. In addition I hold an annual three day summer school, again at Shottery, devoted to both life drawing and painting.
I occasionally run life drawing and/or painting courses for schools, colleges, art groups and galleries. Very occasionally I have been persuaded to talk about my own work.
